When Is It a Pet Emergency?

It’s not always easy to know whether your pet’s symptoms require emergency treatment. Below are some signs that indicate your pet may need immediate attention from a veterinarian:

  • Trauma or injury (e.g., hit by a car, bite wounds)

  • Difficulty breathing, persistent coughing, or choking

  • Seizures, tremors, or collapse

  • Uncontrolled bleeding or bleeding from the nose, mouth, or rectum

  • Ingestion of toxic substances (e.g., chocolate, medications, household cleaners)

  • Swelling around the face or hives (possible allergic reaction)

  • Issues urinating or defecating

  • Sudden weakness, extreme lethargy, or unconsciousness

  • Heatstroke or heat-related stress

  • Ongoing vomiting or diarrhea lasting more than 24 hours

  • Not eating or drinking for more than 24 hours

  • Eye injuries or sudden loss of vision
